Shilpgram, meaning “Craftsmen’s Village,” is a unique rural arts and crafts complex located about 3 kilometers west of Udaipur, Rajasthan. Spread over 70 acres amidst the beautiful Aravalli Hills, it was established in 1989 by the West Zone Cultural Centre to promote the traditional arts and crafts of rural India.
Shilpgram features more than 30 huts representing the rural architecture of different states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa. These huts are built using local materials and techniques, giving visitors an authentic feel of rural life. Inside, artisans demonstrate crafts like pottery, weaving, blacksmithing, wood carving, leatherwork, and embroidery.
The complex has an open-air amphitheatre with a seating capacity of around 8000 people. Folk music, dance performances, and traditional theatre are regularly held here, providing a rich cultural experience.
Held annually in December, the Shilpgram Festival is a major attraction. This 10-day event brings together hundreds of artisans from across India who display and sell their handmade products. The festival also includes live music, dance, puppet shows, workshops, and traditional food stalls.
Visitors can participate in hands-on workshops such as pottery making, fabric dyeing, and painting. These activities are educational and suitable for all age groups, especially children and students.
A dedicated bazaar area allows artisans to sell their products directly to the public. Items like handwoven textiles, wooden toys, terracotta figures, paintings, and tribal jewelry are popular buys.
