About Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary

Set in the Aravalli hills around the hill station of Mount Abu, this sanctuary covers about 290 sq km and was established in 1980. It is a lush, moist-deciduous enclave atypical of the arid west, sheltering leopard, sloth bear, sambar and wild boar. It is also home to fewer than 200 wild Asiatic lions in a small relict introduction of Gir lions.

Mount Abu Winter Festival

Held annually in late December (typically 29-31 December), the Mount Abu Winter Festival is Rajasthan Tourism's celebration of the region's culture and handicrafts, set against the hill-station backdrop adjoining the wildlife sanctuary. A grand procession leads to Nakki Lake, where the Deepdaan ceremony sets hundreds of oil lamps afloat at dusk. Folk performances, handicraft stalls, kite-flying, rowing competitions and a fireworks display round out the two-day programme.
