Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary, located approximately 18 km from Dholpur in Rajasthan, is one of the state’s oldest wildlife reserves. Established in 1955, it spans about 60 square kilometers across the Vindhyan Plateau, characterized by dry deciduous forests dominated by Dhok and Khair trees.

 Wildlife & Biodiversity

The sanctuary is home to a diverse range of fauna, including:

  • Mammals: Sambar, Chital, Nilgai (Blue Bull), Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Hyena, and Leopard.

  • Birds: Over 200 species, such as Sarus Crane, Grey Heron, Pelicans, Ibis, and various migratory ducks and geese during winter months .

  • Reptiles: Indian Python, Cobra, and Monitor Lizard.

Historically, tigers were present until the 1960s.

  • Timings: Open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

  • Entry Fee: ₹5 for Indian nationals; ₹10 for foreign visitors.

  • Duration: Recommended visit duration is 3–4 hours.

  • Accommodation: An old forest rest house, built by the rulers of Dholpur and now managed by the forest department, is available for booking through the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Dholpur.
