Established in 1940, the Government Museum is housed within the Vinay Vilas Mahal, also known as the City Palace of Alwar. This 18th-century palace, constructed by Maharao Raja Vinay Singh, showcases a blend of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles. The museum’s collection was curated from the royal family’s assemblage of art and artifacts, reflecting their patronage of the arts and interest in preserving history.
The museum’s exhibits are organized into several galleries, each focusing on different aspects of the region’s heritage:
Sculptures and Inscriptions: Featuring 234 sculptures and 11 inscriptions, this gallery includes notable pieces like a 12th-century Shiva-Parvati statue and a 1044 CE dancing Ganesha, highlighting the region’s artistic excellence.
Paintings and Manuscripts: Housing 2,565 paintings and manuscripts in Persian, Urdu, Arabic, and Sanskrit, this section reflects the Mughal and Rajput schools of art, with works such as the Gulistan and Shahnama.
Arms and Armoury: Displaying over 2,700 weapons, including swords, pistols, rifles, and daggers, this gallery offers insight into the martial traditions of Rajasthan.
Miscellaneous Artifacts: This section includes musical instruments, stuffed birds and animals, textiles, ivory items, marble objects, and a notable collection of over 9,700 coins, showcasing the region’s craftsmanship and economic history.
Timings: Open from 9:45 AM to 5:15 PM, Tuesday to Sunday. Closed on Mondays and during Dhulandi (Holi).
