RANTHAMBORE

Bala Quila, also known as Alwar Fort, is a majestic hill fort situated in the Aravalli Range, overlooking the city of Alwar in Rajasthan. Perched approximately 300 meters above the city, the fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

 Historical Significance

• Originally constructed by the Nikumbh Rajputs in 928 CE, Bala Quila has witnessed a rich tapestry of rulers and renovations. In 1492, Khanzada Alawal Khan captured the fort from the Nikumbh Rajputs to halt the practice of human sacrifice. His son, Hasan Khan Mewati, reconstructed the fort in the early 16th century. Over the centuries, the fort came under the control of various powers, including the Mughals, Marathas, Jats, and finally the Kachhwaha Rajputs. In 1775, Maharao Raja Pratap Singh of Alwar State seized the fort and established the city of Alwar nearby. 

 Architectural Features

• Bala Quila stretches approximately 5 kilometers in length and 1.5 kilometers in width. The fort boasts six grand gates: Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Krishen Pol, and Andheri Gate. Within its walls are 15 large and 51 small towers, along with 446 openings designed for musketry. The fort’s architecture includes marble columns, intricately patterned balconies, and ancient scriptures and sculptures adorning its walls.

• Timings: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, open all days of the week.
• Entry Fee:

Indian nationals: ₹10 per person.

Foreign nationals: ₹100 per person.

Two-wheeler entry: ₹20 (own vehicle).

Gypsy safari: ₹1,350–₹1,500 per vehicle (up to 6 persons). 

• Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to explore Bala Quila is between November and February when the weather is pleasant.

 How to Reach

• Bala Quila is located approximately 595 meters from Alwar city. The fort is accessible via a metalled road through Laxman Pol, the only such road connecting the fort to the city.
