BADE PEER SAHEB DARGAH

NAGAUR

Bade Peer Saheb Dargah is a revered Sufi shrine located in Nagaur, Rajasthan. It is dedicated to the 16th-century Sufi saint Syed Saifuddin Abdul Wahab Gilani, popularly known as Bade Peer Saheb. This dargah is one of the most important spiritual centers of the Qadiri Sufi order in India and attracts thousands of devotees from across the country.

Historical and Spiritual Importance

The shrine is believed to be over 800 years old and is deeply connected to the spiritual legacy of Abdul Qadir Gilani, the founder of the Qadiri Sufi order. Bade Peer Saheb was a descendant of this lineage and played a major role in spreading Sufi teachings and values in Rajasthan.

Architecture and Atmosphere

The dargah features beautiful Islamic architecture with white domes, carved arches, jali windows (lattice screens), and a peaceful courtyard. The calm and serene environment of the shrine makes it a place of spiritual reflection and unity. People of all religions visit to seek blessings and offer prayers.

Rituals and Beliefs

Devotees tie threads on the jali (lattice window) of the dargah while making wishes. It is believed that these prayers are answered with faith and devotion. The dargah also conducts regular qawwali performances, especially during festive occasions, creating a deeply devotional and cultural atmosphere.

Museum Inside the Dargah

Since April 2008, the dargah has hosted a small museum, which displays:

  • A handwritten Quran in golden ink by Syed Saifuddin

  • His walking stick and headgear

  • Antique Indian coins dating back to the early 1800s

  • Rare coins from other countries, including old American coins

This museum adds a historical and educational element to the spiritual experience and is considered unique among Indian dargahs.

Annual Urs Festival

One of the major events at the dargah is the Urs festival, held annually in October to commemorate the saint’s death anniversary. The six-day celebration includes:

  • Ritual washing of the shrine

  • Congregational prayers

  • Qawwali nights

  • Chadar processions and devotional gatherings
