Nagari, located about 18 km north of Chittorgarh, is one of the oldest historical towns in Rajasthan. It holds immense archaeological and cultural significance and is believed to have been a flourishing city during the Maurya and Gupta periods.

 Historical Importance:
  • Ancient Name: Nagari was known as Madhyamika in ancient times.

  • It was an important center of Buddhism and Shaivism, and many coins, inscriptions, and sculptures from various dynasties have been found here.

  • The famous Hathibada Ghosundi inscriptions, which provide early references to Vaishnavism (worship of Vishnu), were discovered in this area.

 Archaeological Significance:
  • Excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have unearthed fortified walls, temple ruins, and terracotta artifacts.

  • Numerous Brahmi inscriptions, punch-marked coins, and statues dating back to the 2nd century BCE have been recovered, indicating the area’s ancient urban culture.

  • Distance: About 18 km from Chittorgarh city.

  • By Road: Easily reachable by local transport or taxi from Chittorgarh.

 Tips for Visitors:
  • A must-visit for history enthusiasts and archaeology lovers.

  • Best visited during the cooler months (October to March).

  • Since it’s not a fully developed tourist site, facilities may be limited—carry water and essentials.
