ALWAR
ALWAR
Bhangarh Fort, located in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, is renowned as one of India’s most haunted sites, steeped in history, legends, and architectural intrigue.
Constructed in 1573 by Raja Bhagwant Das, Bhangarh Fort was intended as the residence for his second son, Madho Singh. Strategically positioned at the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Aravalli hills, the fort was part of a once-thriving town that eventually fell into decline after the death of Madho Singh’s son, Chhatra Singh, in 1630. By 1783, following a devastating famine, the town was abandoned and remains uninhabited to this day.
Bhangarh Fort’s eerie reputation is fueled by two prominent legends:
The Curse of the Ascetic: A hermit named Guru Balu Nath permitted the fort’s construction under the condition that its shadow would never fall upon his dwelling. When subsequent expansions violated this agreement, it’s said that the hermit cursed the fort, leading to its ruin.
The Tale of Princess Ratnavati: A local sorcerer, Singhia, fell in love with the beautiful Princess Ratnavati and attempted to enchant her with a love potion. The princess, aware of his intentions, thwarted his plan, leading to his death. Before dying, Singhia cursed the fort, which is believed to have led to its downfall.
Due to these tales, the Archaeological Survey of India has prohibited entry to the fort between sunset and sunrise, warning of legal consequences for violators.
Despite its ruined state, Bhangarh Fort showcases impressive architecture:
Temples: Including the Gopinath, Someshwar, and Mangla Devi temples.
Havelis: Such as the Purohitji Ki Haveli and Nachan Ki Haveli.
Royal Palace: Situated at the fort’s end, offering panoramic views.
Market Area: Ruins of the Jauhari Bazaar reflect the town’s erstwhile vibrancy.
The fort’s layout includes multiple entry gates: Lahori, Ajmeri, Phulbari, and Delhi Gates.
Location: Approximately 88 km from Jaipur and 235 km from Delhi.
Best Time to Visit: Daytime hours; entry is prohibited after sunset.
Nearby Attractions: Sariska Tiger Reserve, offering wildlife experiences.
Visitors often report an uncanny atmosphere, attributed more to the fort’s desolation and legends than to any confirmed paranormal activity.
